The Great Migration.
Follow Tanzania's greatest wildlife story from the northern safari country into the Serengeti — moving with the landscapes, wildlife and seasonal rhythm rather than simply ticking destinations off a map.
Don't just look for the migration. Follow the wild.
The Great Migration is not a single event in one place. It is a constantly moving wildlife system shaped by rain, grass, water and the animals' instinctive search for the next grazing grounds.
This 7–10 day Northern Tanzania journey is designed as a point-to-point adventure. Instead of returning to the same base every night, the route progresses through Tanzania's landscapes, allowing the journey itself to become part of the experience.
The exact Serengeti route is refined around your travel dates and current wildlife movement. That flexibility is essential to experiencing migration properly.
One landscape leads to another.
The route below represents the full 10-day journey. A 7, 8 or 9-day version can be created by removing selected nights while keeping the strongest migration zone for your dates.
A moving story written across the Serengeti.
More than a million wildebeest move through the wider Serengeti ecosystem alongside large numbers of zebra and gazelle. Their movement follows the availability of fresh grazing and water.
That is why a serious migration itinerary cannot be built around one fixed location. The experience is strongest when the route is designed around the season and adjusted to the movement on the ground.
We plan around the migration rather than promising a guaranteed animal encounter at a specific crossing or location.
Four seasons. One moving ecosystem.
The following is a planning framework rather than a guarantee of exact animal positions. Migration timing responds to environmental conditions and can vary from year to year.
Southern Serengeti
The southern plains and Ndutu area can become especially important during the calving period, when the plains turn green and young wildebeest appear in large numbers.
Central & Western
As conditions change, herds can move through central and western parts of the ecosystem. The Western Corridor can become a major chapter of the journey.
Northern Serengeti
Northern Serengeti becomes particularly important for journeys seeking the Mara River region and northern migration landscapes.
Returning South
Short rains help renew grazing in parts of the southern ecosystem and the migration begins another phase of its continuous cycle.
Ten days. Point to point.
This is the full-length version of the journey. The exact Serengeti overnight locations are adjusted according to your travel dates and the migration zone being targeted. Every day is designed to feel like movement into deeper wilderness.
Day 01 Arusha → Tarangire National Park +
Your adventure begins in Arusha as you leave the city behind and drive toward Tarangire. The landscape changes quickly — farmland and settlements giving way to open bush, giant baobabs and the seasonal Tarangire River system.
After entering the park, begin your first game drive immediately. Rather than rushing directly to camp, the route becomes your first wildlife experience.
Expect a day of elephants, giraffes, zebra, antelope and changing landscapes, with the possibility of predators moving through the herds.
Arrive at your lodge or tented camp later in the afternoon and settle into your first night in the wild.
Day 02 Tarangire → Karatu / Ngorongoro Highlands +
Wake early for another game drive through Tarangire while the morning light is still low. This is when the bush feels most alive.
After the morning wildlife experience, leave the park and continue toward the Ngorongoro highlands.
The journey becomes increasingly dramatic as the road climbs through cultivated highlands and volcanic country before reaching Karatu.
This transition is deliberate: two very different Tanzanian landscapes in a single day, preparing you for the open plains of the Serengeti.
Day 03 Karatu → Ngorongoro → Southern / Central Serengeti +
Today the journey changes scale.
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a wildlife experience surrounded by one of Tanzania's most dramatic volcanic landscapes.
After the crater experience, continue westward toward the Serengeti. The landscape opens, the road becomes more remote and the horizon begins to stretch.
Depending on your travel dates, the overnight point can be positioned toward the southern Serengeti / Ndutu area or toward central Serengeti so that the following days are aligned with current migration movement.
Day 04 Southern / Central Serengeti — Full Migration Day +
This is a full wilderness day.
There is no need to rush toward another destination. Your guide will use the day to explore the plains, tracks, water points and wildlife areas relevant to the current season.
In the southern migration season, this can mean spending time around the short-grass plains and following the calving landscape. At other times of year, the route can shift toward central Serengeti and the Seronera ecosystem.
The aim is not simply to find wildebeest. It is to experience the wider ecosystem — predators, resident wildlife, birds, kopjes, plains and the constantly changing rhythm of the day.
Day 05 Southern / Central → Western Serengeti +
Today the safari becomes a true expedition.
Leave your previous camp after an early wildlife drive and begin moving deeper across the Serengeti.
The route toward the Western Corridor is not simply a transfer. Game viewing continues throughout the journey, with opportunities to stop whenever the landscape reveals something worth seeing.
Arrive toward the western side of the ecosystem and settle into a more remote safari atmosphere.
Day 06 Western Serengeti → Central Serengeti +
Rise before sunrise for a final western game drive before beginning the journey toward central Serengeti.
This is an intentionally adventurous day: long stretches of wilderness, changing habitats and wildlife encounters appearing naturally along the route.
By afternoon, the landscape begins to feel different again as you approach the central Serengeti and Seronera area.
The evening is spent watching the plains settle beneath the last light.
Day 07 Central → Northern Serengeti +
Leave central Serengeti early and begin the long northbound journey.
This is one of the defining days of the expedition. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged and remote as you approach the northern Serengeti.
In the appropriate season, this region becomes particularly important for travellers following the herds toward the Mara River system.
Your overnight position is selected to maximize access to the northern wildlife areas rather than simply placing you in a convenient central camp.
Day 08 Northern Serengeti — Mara River Wilderness +
Today belongs entirely to the northern Serengeti.
Begin early and move through the northern plains, scanning the open country and river landscapes for wildlife activity.
During the appropriate migration period, this can become the chapter dedicated to the Mara River region and the dramatic possibility of wildebeest gathering near crossing areas.
A crossing is never guaranteed. The river, weather, herd behaviour and timing all influence what happens. The adventure is in being there when the landscape changes.
Return to camp after a full day in the north.
Day 09 Northern Serengeti → Central Serengeti +
After one final northern sunrise, begin the journey south through the Serengeti.
The road itself becomes a game drive. There is no need to rush; the route is an opportunity to revisit wildlife areas and discover scenes that were missed on the northbound journey.
Spend the final Serengeti night around central Serengeti, creating a natural transition toward the final journey out of the park.
Day 10 Serengeti → Arusha +
Your final morning begins with one last early game drive through the Serengeti.
Depending on your onward plans, you can continue by road toward Arusha or connect with an onward flight from one of the Serengeti airstrips.
For the full road journey, the route gradually leaves the plains and returns toward the northern highlands and Arusha.
The migration continues after you leave. Your journey simply ends at the edge of the ecosystem.
Four landscapes. Four different safari moods.
The migration moves through a much larger ecosystem. These regions give the journey its changing character.
Southern Serengeti
Open short-grass plains, calving landscapes and a strong connection to the beginning of the migration's annual cycle.
Central Serengeti
The Seronera ecosystem combines resident wildlife, kopjes, open plains and strong predator habitat with access toward several migration routes.
Western Serengeti
A more remote chapter of the Serengeti with changing landscapes and the Western Corridor forming an important part of the wider ecosystem.
Northern Serengeti
Hills, open country and the Mara River region make the north one of the most dramatic landscapes of the migration journey.
When the Mara holds its breath.
The Mara River is one of the most dramatic landscapes associated with the northern migration route.
But the river crossing is not a scheduled performance. Herds can gather, wait, change direction or move elsewhere. This uncertainty is part of what makes the experience genuinely wild.
When conditions align, the scale and intensity of the scene can be extraordinary.
Build the journey around how you want to experience it.
Wildlife remains at the centre, but the journey can be shaped with additional experiences depending on location, season, availability and park regulations.
Extended Game Drives
Spend more time in the field and allow the day to develop naturally around wildlife activity.
Balloon Safari
See the Serengeti from above during an early morning balloon experience, subject to availability.
Walking Safari
Experience the landscape at a different pace with a permitted guided walking experience.
Bush Dining
Replace the ordinary dining room with an outdoor bush meal where permitted and arranged by camp.
Sleep close to the wilderness.
