Arusha
National Park.

A quieter side of Tanzania — where volcanic landscapes, mountain forest, open glades and beautiful lakes gather beneath the presence of Mount Meru.

The landscape

Arusha National Park is small in scale, but remarkably diverse in character.

Just a short journey from Arusha city, the park moves through a striking sequence of landscapes — from open grassy glades and wildlife-rich plains to montane forest, volcanic crater country and the high slopes of Mount Meru.

It is a place for travellers who want to slow down. Game drives are only part of the story here. Walking, canoeing, birding and mountain experiences allow you to experience the landscape at a more intimate pace.

The result is a different expression of northern Tanzania: green, cool, dramatic and wonderfully close to Arusha.

01 / MOUNT MERU
The mountain above the forest

A mountain with its own personality.

Rising to approximately 4,566 metres, Mount Meru dominates the park and creates much of its dramatic character.

Its volcanic form, forested slopes and spectacular caldera create a landscape very different from the open plains of the Serengeti.

For adventurous travellers, the mountain can become the journey itself, with multi-day hiking through changing vegetation zones toward the summit.

Wildlife in the high country

Where the forest meets the savannah.

Arusha's diversity of habitats creates a surprising mixture of wildlife within a compact landscape.

Open glades provide grazing areas while forested slopes create a different world altogether. Around the lakes, water-dependent wildlife and birds add another layer to the experience.

A signature encounter

Look into the forest.

Arusha National Park is particularly known for its black-and-white colobus monkeys. Their contrasting coats can appear between the trees, while their calls carry through the forest.

“The wilderness here is experienced as much through sound, movement and atmosphere as through distance.”

This is one of the reasons walking in Arusha can feel so different from a conventional game drive: the forest becomes part of the safari experience.
