A movement without a beginning or end. The herds follow rain, grass and water across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem.
The phenomenon

Not a single event.
A living rhythm.

The Great Migration is not simply a river crossing or a particular month on a safari calendar. It is an immense ecological cycle in which huge herds of wildebeest move through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem in response to changing grazing and water conditions.

Across the year, the character of the safari changes: open plains, newborn calves, territorial predators, gathering herds and dramatic river country each reveal a different chapter of the same story.

The cycle

Two moments define the imagination. Both are only chapters.

CHAPTER 01 · CALVING

Life on the plains.

The southern Serengeti and adjoining short-grass plains become a remarkable nursery when conditions bring the herds together. Newborn calves create a powerful concentration of life — and attract predators.

CHAPTER 02 · PREDATORS

The hunters follow.

Lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators are part of the wider migration story. Where prey concentrates, predator encounters can become especially intense.

The precise location of the herds can change with rainfall, grazing conditions and local circumstances. Think of the calendar as a guide to the character of each period rather than a guarantee of where an individual herd will be on a particular day.

Calving Plains

Southern Serengeti and surrounding short-grass plains become a focal area for calving. Young animals, large herds and predator activity shape the safari.

Green Season

As conditions change, the herds begin moving away from the southern plains. Fresh landscapes and dramatic skies can create a very different photographic atmosphere.

Gathering & Movement

Herds gather and movement becomes a defining part of the experience. The Western Corridor and central areas can become important chapters in the journey.

Northern Country

Northern Serengeti becomes particularly important as the migration reaches the wider Mara ecosystem. River country brings one of the most famous chapters.

The Return South

Short rains begin changing the landscape. The cycle continues as herds move toward greener grazing and the southern plains.

Where to follow it

Four landscapes.
One moving story.

The best migration safari is built around geography as well as timing. Each Serengeti region offers a different landscape and a different relationship with the moving herds.

01 · Central Serengeti

The heart
of the park.

Central Serengeti is an important year-round safari area, offering open plains, kopjes and strong resident wildlife alongside seasonal migration movements.

It is particularly useful when designing a migration journey that should also deliver a broad Serengeti wildlife experience beyond the moving herds.

02 · Southern Serengeti

Where new
life begins.

The southern plains are closely associated with the calving chapter of the migration. Short grasses and seasonal conditions can bring large concentrations of wildebeest together.

This is a particularly compelling region for travellers interested in the relationship between newborn wildlife, predators and the wider ecology of the plains.

03 · Western Corridor

The journey
gathers pace.

The Western Corridor provides a distinctive transition through the Serengeti, with riverine landscapes and seasonal movement creating a different visual language from the open eastern plains.

It can become an important part of a journey when the migration is moving west and north.

04 · Northern Serengeti

Into the
northern wild.

Northern Serengeti is where the migration story becomes strongly associated with the Mara River and the wider Serengeti–Mara ecosystem.

The region is especially compelling for travellers who want to experience northern landscapes while following seasonal herd movements.

More than wildebeest

The migration
feeds an entire world.

The moving herds are only one part of the spectacle. Their presence influences predators, scavengers and the wider grassland ecosystem — creating a constantly changing wildlife story.

The Mara River.
Nothing is guaranteed.

The river crossing is one of the migration's most iconic images — but nature does not operate on a timetable. Herds can gather, wait, turn back or cross when conditions align.

That uncertainty is part of the experience. A well-designed northern migration safari gives you time in the area rather than promising a particular crossing on a particular day.

River-crossing viewing is managed under park regulations. Vehicles must remain in designated areas and stationary while animals cross; approaching animals during crossings is not permitted.
How to experience it

Build the safari
around the moment.

The migration deserves more than a rushed game drive. We shape the journey around where you are travelling, how long you can stay and which chapter of the migration you want to explore.

01 · FROM ABOVE

Hot Air Balloon

See the Serengeti from above at first light, with plains, rivers and wildlife unfolding beneath you.

02 · THROUGH THE LENS

Photography Safari

Slow down for light, behaviour, landscapes and the fleeting encounters that make migration photography extraordinary.

03 · CLOSE TO THE WILD

Mobile Camps

Follow the story through carefully selected camps and lodges, balancing comfort with proximity to the landscapes of the migration.

The art of waiting

Sometimes the best safari moment is the one you didn't expect.

Migration photography is as much about patience as it is about action. Golden light, dust, silhouettes, dramatic skies and animal behaviour can be as memorable as the headline moments.

  • Dawn departures
  • Golden-hour game drives
  • Long-lens wildlife photography
  • Landscape & herd compositions
  • Private vehicle flexibility
Planning your migration

The secret is
time.

Because the migration moves according to natural conditions, flexibility matters. Instead of promising one spectacle, we build a journey that gives you multiple opportunities to encounter the wildlife and landscapes that define the season.

01

Stay Longer

More nights create more opportunities to experience changing wildlife behaviour, weather and movement.

02

Choose the Region

Your route should reflect the season and the migration chapter you want to experience.

03

Use a Private Vehicle

A private safari gives your guide greater flexibility to shape each day around wildlife and light.

04

Follow the Conditions

Rainfall and grazing conditions influence movement. Local intelligence is essential when planning.

05

Mix the Experience

Combine migration-focused days with classic Serengeti wildlife, photography, ballooning or other experiences.

06

Keep Expectations Natural

Wildlife is never scripted. The most memorable moments often happen away from the expected itinerary.

Migration questions

Before you
follow the herds.

A few practical answers before you begin planning your Great Migration journey through Tanzania.

No. The migration is a year-round ecological cycle. July and August are strongly associated with northern movement and possible Mara River crossings, while other months can offer calving, gathering herds, predator encounters and the return south.

No. River crossings depend on animal behaviour, weather, water levels and other natural conditions. A responsible safari operator should never promise a crossing on a specific day.

Calving is generally associated with the southern Serengeti and short-grass plains during the early months of the year. Exact timing varies with environmental conditions.

There is no universal number. A longer stay generally gives you more flexibility because wildlife movement cannot be scheduled like a human event. We can shape the itinerary around your available time and desired migration chapter.

A private vehicle can provide greater flexibility in departure times, photography stops, daily routing and how the safari day is shaped around your interests.

Yes. A migration journey can be combined with Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Arusha, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar depending on the length and style of your trip.
