Into The South.
A deeper Tanzania journey into river country, wild plains and remote wilderness — combining Nyerere, Ruaha and the southern landscapes for travellers who want to go beyond the classic northern safari route.
Go further. Slow down. Stay wild.
Southern Tanzania feels different from the classic northern circuit. The journey is less about moving between a long list of headline destinations and more about entering larger, quieter landscapes where rivers, woodland, open plains and remote camps shape the rhythm of the safari.
Seven days creates a strong introduction to the south. Eight to ten days allow more time between Nyerere and Ruaha. Eleven or twelve days can add slower wildlife days, private experiences and a more immersive point-to-point journey.
Arusha / Dar es Salaam → Nyerere → Ruaha → onward.
The southern route is deliberately flexible. Depending on your arrival point, flight connections, season and preferred pace, the journey can begin or end in different cities and use flights between remote safari areas to protect your time in the wilderness.
River, woodland, plains and wilderness.
Southern Tanzania rewards a slower style of travel. The strongest route depends on the season, road and air access, camp availability and the kind of wildlife experience you want.
Nyerere
River landscapes, woodland and open country create a safari experience with a different rhythm from the northern parks.
Rufiji
Water becomes part of the safari story, with river and lake environments opening another way to experience wildlife.
Ruaha
Vast wilderness, rugged terrain and a strong sense of space create one of Tanzania’s defining southern safari chapters.
Beyond the South
Extend the journey with additional southern wilderness, coastal time or a flight onward to Zanzibar.
The 12-day master itinerary.
Use this as the complete Southern Tanzania framework. A 7-, 8-, 9-, 10- or 11-day version can be created by concentrating the route around Nyerere and Ruaha and reducing selected transfer or return days.
01Arrival → Southern Tanzania Gateway
Begin the southern chapter from the most practical gateway for your international or domestic connection. Meet your safari team, settle in and prepare for a journey designed around wilderness rather than a crowded park-to-park schedule.
The exact overnight and flight connection are selected according to your arrival time and final route.
02Fly / Travel → Nyerere National Park
Travel south toward Nyerere and enter a landscape defined by river systems, woodland and open plains. The first game drive introduces the slower, more expansive character of southern Tanzania.
Arrive at camp and let the wilderness begin to set the pace.
03Nyerere — River & Wilderness Day
Spend a full day exploring Nyerere. Follow the landscape rather than a fixed checklist, moving between open country, woodland and the river environment as conditions and wildlife activity suggest.
This is the first opportunity to experience the south at a slower pace, with long periods in the field and time to appreciate the landscape as much as individual sightings.
04Nyerere — Water, Wildlife & Optional Walking
Use another day to explore a different side of the reserve. Depending on the final camp and permissions, the experience can include additional game viewing, a water-based activity or a guided walking experience where available and permitted.
The goal is not to repeat the previous day but to change the way you encounter the wilderness.
05Nyerere → Ruaha
Move deeper into southern Tanzania toward Ruaha. Where practical, a scheduled safari flight can replace a long road transfer and protect valuable wildlife time.
On arrival, enter Ruaha for an afternoon game drive and experience the immediate change in terrain, vegetation and scale.
06Ruaha — Full Wilderness Day
Leave early for a full Ruaha safari day. Explore open plains, woodland, rocky country and riverine habitats while looking for elephants, predators and the many species that make the southern ecosystem distinct.
Keep the route flexible. In a remote landscape, a quiet stretch of country can be just as rewarding as a famous wildlife sighting.
07Ruaha — Predators, Elephants & Wild Country
Spend a second full day going deeper into Ruaha. Your guide can tailor the route toward photography, predators, elephants, birds, landscapes or a balanced wildlife day.
Longer stays are where the southern safari really starts to feel different: fewer rushed movements and more time for the natural rhythm of the wilderness.
08Ruaha — Slow Safari / Walking Experience
Use the additional time for a different style of safari. Where permitted and properly guided, a walking experience can shift your attention from distant sightings to tracks, spoor, plants, birds and the small details of the landscape.
Alternatively, keep the day entirely vehicle-based for a deeper wildlife exploration.
09Ruaha → Southern Wilderness / Extension
For the longer 10–12 day versions, use this chapter to extend the southern wilderness rather than returning immediately. The final location depends on your selected camp, season and air connections.
For shorter journeys, this day can be removed and the safari can move directly toward the return connection.
10Southern Tanzania — Final Wilderness Day
Make the most of a final full day in the south. The itinerary can be shaped around a last major game drive, photography, a private bush experience or simply time to absorb the landscape.
This extra day is one of the reasons the 10–12 day version works so well for travellers who want to slow down.
11Southern Tanzania → Gateway
Take the appropriate safari flight or road connection toward your departure gateway. Where possible, keep the schedule relaxed so the final transition does not feel like an abrupt end to the safari.
For a 7–10 day journey, this chapter can be compressed or removed depending on flight schedules.
12Departure / Continue to Zanzibar
End the Southern Tanzania journey with your onward flight, or continue to Zanzibar for an Indian Ocean chapter of beaches, culture and time beside the sea.
Where the river gives way to wild country.
Nyerere and Ruaha create a powerful contrast: waterways and open country in the east, rugged woodland and broad wilderness farther west. The point is not to collect destinations — it is to experience a different side of Tanzania.
Experience Southern Tanzania from more than one angle.
Extended Game Drives
Spend longer in the field and let the landscape determine the pace of the day.
River Experiences
Where available and permitted, experience the southern waterways from a different perspective.
Walking Safari
Explore tracks, spoor and smaller details of the landscape with the required professional guidance.
Bush Dining
Turn a remote wilderness setting into part of the memory of the journey.
Camp deeper into the wilderness.
Southern Tanzania is particularly suited to intimate camps and remote lodges where the setting is part of the experience. The final combination depends on your route, season, availability and preferred level of comfort.
Seven days or twelve? The difference is depth.
Southern introduction.
Combine the strongest Nyerere and Ruaha chapters with efficient internal connections.
More breathing room.
Give both major destinations meaningful time without making the journey feel rushed.

What makes Southern Tanzania different?
The southern safari experience is often built around larger, more remote landscapes and a slower style of travel, with river environments in Nyerere and broad wilderness landscapes in Ruaha.
Can I do Nyerere and Ruaha in seven days?
Yes. A seven-day version should use efficient connections and concentrate the route around the strongest experiences in each destination.
Is it better to drive or fly between the parks?
The answer depends on your preferred style and the final route. Safari flights can be useful when the priority is protecting wildlife time and avoiding long road transfers.
Can I include walking?
Walking can be incorporated where the selected area, operator and current permissions allow it, with the required professional guidance and safety procedures.
Can I combine Southern Tanzania with Zanzibar?
Yes. The southern safari can finish with a flight onward to Zanzibar for a separate beach and Indian Ocean chapter.
Can this be a luxury safari?
Yes. Remote luxury camps, private arrangements, selected internal flights and tailored experiences can be incorporated according to availability and the final itinerary.
