Nyerere
National Park.

A vast southern wilderness shaped by the Rufiji River, where elephants move through floodplains, wild dogs cross open country and the river becomes the safari itself.

Rufiji River Wild Dogs Southern Wilderness
The southern wilderness

Nyerere is Tanzania at a different rhythm — immense, river-shaped and wonderfully wild.

Formerly part of the legendary Selous landscape, Nyerere National Park protects an enormous mosaic of miombo woodland, floodplains, riverine habitats and the channels of the Rufiji River.

Here, the classic game drive is only one way to experience the wilderness. The river opens another perspective entirely, bringing you close to hippos, crocodiles, elephants and extraordinary birdlife.

The scale of the landscape also creates a sense of space that is increasingly rare — long horizons, quiet tracks and wildlife encounters that feel deeply connected to the environment.

The river of life

The Rufiji
changes everything.

The Rufiji River is the defining feature of Nyerere. Its broad waters, channels, sandbanks and oxbow lakes create an extraordinary network of habitats for wildlife.

On a boat safari, the perspective changes completely. Instead of watching the river from its banks, you move through the ecosystem itself.

Hippos & Crocodiles Often found along the river channels, sandbanks and lakes.
Elephant Country Elephants regularly use the river and surrounding floodplains.
Birdlife Fish-eagles, kingfishers, bee-eaters and wetland birds.
Signature experience

Safari from the water.

There are few better ways to understand Nyerere than from the deck of a boat moving quietly along the Rufiji.

Water brings you close to a different cast of wildlife. Hippos gather in deeper channels, crocodiles lie motionless on sandbanks and elephants often come to drink.

As afternoon light softens, the river becomes a spectacular setting for photography, birdwatching and a slower kind of safari.

Experience the south

Three ways into the wilderness.

Nyerere's character comes from experiencing the same landscape from different perspectives — by water, on foot and across its immense wildlife country.

01 · Water

Boat Safaris

Follow the Rufiji's channels and lakes in search of hippos, crocodiles, elephants and birds.

02 · On foot

Walking Safaris

Slow the journey down and read the landscape through tracks, plants, sounds and signs of wildlife.

03 · Wilderness

Game Drives

Explore woodland, floodplain and open country in search of elephants, predators and plains game.

01 / AFRICAN WILD DOGS
A southern Tanzania icon

Follow the tracks of one of Africa's rarest predators.

Nyerere is recognised as an important stronghold for African wild dogs. Their large territories and constantly moving packs make encounters unpredictable — and all the more memorable.

The wild dog is not something you schedule. It is something the wilderness gives you.

Alongside wild dogs, the park supports lions, leopards and hyenas across a landscape of woodland and open floodplain.

Beyond the river

A wilderness of woodland, plains and water.

Nyerere is not only a river safari destination. Away from the Rufiji, vast miombo woodlands and open grasslands create a completely different wildlife experience.

Buffalo, giraffe, impala, waterbuck, sable, Lichtenstein's hartebeest and other plains game occupy this varied landscape, while predators move through the same ecosystem.

Birdlife

Follow the river. Watch the sky.

The Rufiji's wetlands, lakes and riverine habitats create exceptional conditions for birdwatching.

430+ Bird species
recorded

Fish-eagles, kingfishers, bee-eaters, wetland waders and other riverine species add movement and colour to every boat journey.

For photographers and birders, the combination of water-level viewpoints and wide-open landscapes makes Nyerere particularly rewarding.

When to go

Follow the seasons.

Nyerere changes dramatically through the year. Dry-season wildlife viewing and green-season landscapes each reveal a different side of the park.

River levels, rainfall and vegetation influence animal movements and the accessibility of different areas, so the ideal timing depends on the experience you want to build.

June — October The dry season generally concentrates wildlife around remaining water sources and creates excellent conditions for classic game viewing.
November — December The landscape begins responding to rainfall, bringing fresher vegetation and changing river and wildlife patterns.
January — February Green landscapes can be especially beautiful, with strong opportunities for birding and photography.
March — May The wetter season brings lush scenery but can affect some roads and access routes. Conditions should be checked when planning travel.
