Tarangire
Baobab-dotted country, river landscapes and a distinctive elephant-focused safari experience.
A point-to-point safari through Tanzania’s classic northern landscapes — from Arusha and elephant country to the Rift Valley, Ngorongoro and the vast Serengeti.
The Northern Circuit brings together the places that define a classic Tanzania safari: Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti. The route can be compressed into six days or opened up over eight or nine days for slower game drives and deeper time in the wilderness.
Rather than simply ticking parks off a list, the journey moves naturally from one ecosystem to another — from forest and escarpment to baobab country, volcanic highlands and the enormous plains of the Serengeti.
The route is a framework rather than a rigid script. Depending on your dates, arrival time and priorities, selected stops can be shortened or removed to create more time in the destinations that matter most.
The circuit works because every destination brings a different landscape and wildlife experience. The final balance depends on your dates, interests and preferred pace.
Baobab-dotted country, river landscapes and a distinctive elephant-focused safari experience.
Groundwater forest, Rift Valley scenery, birdlife and a compact but remarkably varied ecosystem.
A volcanic landscape, crater floor and the highland scenery surrounding one of Tanzania’s defining safari destinations.
Vast plains, resident wildlife, predators and the stage for the annual Great Migration.
Use this as the complete Northern Circuit framework. A 6-, 7- or 8-day version can be created by removing selected stops and concentrating more time around Tarangire, Ngorongoro or Serengeti.
Meet your Wilddream Safari guide in Arusha and begin the journey with a relaxed introduction to northern Tanzania. Depending on your arrival time, the first afternoon can be kept light so you can settle in before the road journey begins.
Use the evening to review the route, discuss your interests and prepare for the first full day in the wilderness.
Leave Arusha and head into Tarangire, where the landscape opens into dry woodland, baobab country and the river system that gives the park its name. Enter the park and begin the safari immediately.
Spend the afternoon looking for elephants, giraffe, zebra, antelope and predators while learning to read the different habitats of the park.
Continue toward Lake Manyara National Park. The route changes character again as you reach the Rift Valley, with groundwater forest, lake margins, open woodland and the escarpment creating a compact but varied safari environment.
Enjoy a game drive before continuing to Karatu and the Ngorongoro highlands for the evening.
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for an extended wildlife experience. The crater floor brings together grassland, woodland and wetland habitats beneath dramatic volcanic walls.
After the crater experience, return toward the highlands. The evening can be slow and quiet before the next major point of the journey: Serengeti.
Leave the highlands and enter the Serengeti. The transition is part of the adventure: volcanic country gives way to open plains and an enormous sense of space.
Once inside the park, the transfer becomes a game drive. Stop for wildlife, explore the landscape and arrive at camp with the Serengeti already becoming part of the story.
Leave early and spend the day deep in the Serengeti. Rather than racing between a checklist of sightings, follow tracks, predator activity, kopjes, water and the rhythm of the landscape.
The day can be tailored toward big cats, photography, the migration, landscapes or a balanced combination of all four.
Use another full Serengeti day to go deeper instead of packing the morning with another long transfer. Depending on the season, your guide can focus on wildlife concentrations, resident predators, migration activity or quieter landscapes away from the busiest areas.
This is also an ideal day for an extended drive, bush lunch or carefully selected private experience.
Take a final Serengeti morning before beginning the return journey toward the Ngorongoro highlands. The drive remains part of the safari, with time for unexpected wildlife encounters along the way.
Reach Karatu or the surrounding highlands by late afternoon and settle into a quieter final evening.
After breakfast, begin the final road journey toward Arusha. Depending on your onward plans, include a relaxed lunch or final stop before reaching the city.
End the Northern Circuit here, or continue the journey with Kilimanjaro, another safari region or a flight toward Zanzibar.
The Northern Circuit is not only about reaching Serengeti. Ngorongoro creates a dramatic middle chapter between the highlands and the plains — a place where volcanic landscapes, wildlife and the wider conservation area change the rhythm of the journey.
Stay in the field longer when the wildlife story is worth following.
Experience the Serengeti from above at sunrise, subject to availability and conditions.
Explore the landscape on foot where permitted and with the required professional guidance.
Turn a remote wilderness setting into part of the memory of the day.
Move from Arusha boutique comfort to Tarangire camps, Karatu lodges and Serengeti tented camps. The final selection depends on season, availability, comfort level and how much time you want to spend in each destination.
Concentrate on the strongest core destinations and keep the route moving efficiently.
Retain the classic highlights while giving the Serengeti more meaningful time.
Allow additional wildlife time and reduce the feeling of moving between destinations.
Ideal for travellers who want slower mornings, deeper Serengeti time and optional experiences.
Wildlife, photography, family travel, romance, culture or private luxury can change the emphasis.
Add Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar or another Tanzanian destination after the Northern Circuit.
It is the classic northern Tanzania safari route connecting the Arusha area with destinations such as Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti. The exact sequence depends on the final itinerary.
Six days can work for a focused version of the circuit. It requires a more efficient route and fewer extended stays. Longer itineraries allow more depth and flexibility.
